Getting Started With Canva
The first step is to sign up for a Canva account, which is free and super easy to use.
When you first log in to Canva, the dashboard might seem a bit overwhelming. But don’t worry. It’s actually quite simple to navigate once you get the hang of it.
This is where you’ll find all of your designs, projects, and templates, including the pre-formatted Canva templates that are available for you to use.
You can use the search bar to find templates or projects. And you can create new designs, filtering by type, such as social media posts or flyers.
You can also create folders to organize your designs, which can be helpful if you’re working on multiple projects.
For vision boards, I like to use the desktop wallpaper template. To find it:
- click on “Create a design”
- type “desktop” in the search field
- and then select “Desktop Wallpaper”
Alternatively, you can search for “Vision Board” in the dashboard, and you’ll find a lot of different vision board templates created by other Canva users.
It can be helpful to look at these vision board examples even if you decide not to use one of the pre-made templates.
Choosing and Adding Images
Once you’ve chosen your template, it’s time to start finding and adding images.
When choosing pictures for your vision board, keep in mind that they should be a visual representation of what you want to achieve. That could be anything from landing a dream client, publishing a book, living a laptop lifestyle, or retiring your husband early.
When selecting images, go with what resonates with you. Don’t worry if it doesn’t look perfect or if you don’t have professional photos. The goal is to create something that speaks to you, so feel free to use whatever images inspire you.
Canva’s library has plenty of graphics and stock images for you to choose from (even in the free version!).
But if you want to add your own pictures, you can easily upload them into Canva.
Either way, I recommend saving all your images to a folder. That way, they’ll be organized, and you’ll be able to find them easily whenever you need them.
Once you’ve chosen the images for your vision board, it’s time to add them to your design. The easiest way to do this is by using a grid layout. This is one of my favorite features of Canva and why I like to use it for vision boards.
Select Elements and search for grid. Canva has lots of different grid layouts to choose from. You can even combine multiple grids in one design to get the exact look you want.
Then you can drag your images into the grid.
Adding Text and Graphics
Adding design elements like text and graphics to your vision board is a great way to make it even more personalized and inspiring.
Adding text in Canva is super easy. Just click on the “Text” button in the sidebar. You can choose from a ton of different font styles and colors. You can also adjust the size and alignment of your text or add cool effects like drop shadows or outlines.
Adding graphics is just as simple. Click on the “Elements” button and choose from Canva’s massive library of graphics and icons. You can find all sorts of fun stuff there, like stars, arrows, and stickers!
When adding text and graphics to your vision board, remember to think about the vibe you want to create.
Do you want to be inspired? Then maybe add a quote that really speaks to you.
Or, if you’re focused on achieving specific goals, add graphics or icons that represent those goals. Or an affirmation that reminds you of what you’re working towards.
Let’s say you have a goal to increase your social media followers. You could add graphics or icons representing the types of content you share on social media. Additionally, you could include an affirmation or quote that inspires you to keep creating engaging content for your audience.
This will keep you focused on your goal and help you stay motivated and inspired as you work towards achieving it.
Remember, your vision board should reflect your business goals and aspirations, so don’t be afraid to get creative and make it your own!
Finalizing Your Vision Board
Now that you’ve added all your chosen images, graphics, and text, it’s time to finalize it and add any finishing touches.
Take a few minutes to review your work and make sure everything looks balanced and visually appealing.
Play around with your layout until it feels right to you. Add background colors or gradients if you like. Canva has a ton of options to choose from, so don’t be afraid to get creative.
Once you’re happy with the design, it’s time to download it. You can download it as an image or a PDF.
This is my current vision board that I created in Canva.
And you can even set your vision board as your desktop background – that’s why I like to use the desktop wallpaper template!
(Or you could create a vertical design and use it as the lock screen on your phone). Either way, it serves as a daily reminder of your goals.
Tips and Tricks for Using Canva for Vision Boards
Here are a few tips and tricks that can help you create an awesome (and effective) vision board using Canva:
- Use high-quality images. If you’re uploading your own photos to Canva, make sure they’re high-quality and resolution. You don’t want your final vision board to be blurry or pixelated when you download it.
- Use Canva’s templates. One of the great things about Canva is that it has a ton of templates. Take advantage of this! It will save you time and make your vision board look fantastic, even if you’re not a professional designer.
- Play around with fonts. Canva has a bunch of different fonts to choose from, so don’t be afraid to mix and match until you find a combination you love.
- Experiment with different color palettes to evoke different emotions and feelings. For example, warm colors like red, orange, and yellow can be energizing and exciting. Cool colors, like blue and green, can be calming and soothing. You might even want to use different color combinations to represent various aspects of your vision board. For example, you could use one color scheme for business or career goals and another for life goals.
- Keep it simple. While adding everything you love to your board is tempting, try to keep it simple and focused. This can make it more effective and easier to understand.
- Update it regularly. As you achieve your goals or set new ones, make sure to update your board to reflect your progress. That’s one of the great things about a digital vision board – it’s so easy to update!
So that’s it! Creating a vision board with Canva is a fun and easy way to visualize your dreams and stay motivated as you work toward achieving your goals.
